Triomphes cinématographiques et romanesques auprès du grand public ont imposé la fantasy comme un phénomène culturel et commercial incontournable. La recherche universitaire y appliquant une démarche réflexive qui fait partie des étapes nécessaires à la légitimation du genre, c'est de cette petite révolution - la fantasy à l'Université ! -, que témoigne en pionnier le colloque des 16 et 17 mars 2006 dont on trouvera ici les actes réunis, la première rencontre d'universitaires de tous horizons à se tenir sur le sujet en France, regroupant des spécialistes des littératures de l'imaginaire contemporaines et une majorité de médiévistes.
La fantasy est interrogée comme un avatar contemporain du merveilleux médiéval, mais cet héritage est-il bien le même chez Tolkien, grand médiéviste, David Eddings, aux inspirations plus indirectes, ou encore dans le courant de « fantasy arthurienne qui se donne explicitement comme prolongeant une lignée de réécritures de la mythique « Matière ? Les motifs et figures repris ne le sont pas sans évolutions, qu'il s'agisse de revisiter la mythologie nordique ou de réévaluer le sens de la monstruosité, de retrouver, sous de nouvelles incarnations et dans de nouvelles fonctions, jeunes sorciers, cartes « géographiques ou titres de « chroniques . La catégorie même du « merveilleux n'a cessé de se modifier dans son champ d'application, et c'est toute la question de la sensibilité au sacré et au religieux qui se pose. Ce « merveilleux n'en constitue pas moins un critère générique, définitoire pour la fantasy aujourd'hui: quand il s'agit de déterminer l'espace qu'elle occupe au sein des littératures de l'imaginaire, et bien sûr en concurrence avec sa cousine la science-fiction, ce sont deux conceptions du merveilleux qui se dégagent, et des rapports du même type interviennent pour évaluer les mouvements internes qui agitent les différents sous-genres de fantasy et en permettent l'évolution sans essoufflement.
