Dr Adéle Frisby-Lowe was a practising clinical psychologist in South Africa when major depression arrived alongside a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. Over the years that followed it cost her her marriage, most of her friendships and very nearly the career she had built. My Journey to the Light is her account of that descent and of the long, unglamorous climb back - through medication, cognitive behavioural therapy, the steadying company of horses, and a Christian faith that was tested rather than comforted.
The book is written openly from a Christian perspective and draws on the author's diaries, prayers and Scripture. It also sets itself against a familiar assumption in church communities: that a believer should not be depressed, and should not need antidepressants. Frisby-Lowe rejects both, writing as patient and clinician in favour of medical and psychological treatment.
