Excerpt: ... Chapter VII. FIXED MALPOSITIONS AND MALFORMATIONS. While a knowledge of the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of movable displacements of the kidney are of interest and of practical importance to the general practitioner, departures from the normal in respect to situation, form, size, and number are not merely pathological curiosities. To the surgeon who desires to protect his patient and himself against catastrophes in the operating room, an acquaintance with these abnormalities as well as with the malformations of the kidney is a necessity. Renal abnormalities may be divided into three classes: --I. Displacements without mobility. 1. Congenital displacement without deformity. 2. Congenital displacement with deformity. 3. Acquired displacements. II. Malformations of the kidney. 1. Variations in number; (1) supernumerary kidney; (2) single kidney--(a) congenital absence of one kidney, (b) atrophy of one kidney; (3) absence of both kidneys. 2. Variations in form and size; (1) general variation in form, lobulation, &c.; (2) hypertrophy of one kidney: (3) fusion of two kidneys--(a) horse-shoe kidney, (b) sigmoid kidney, (c) disc-shaped kidney. III. Variations in pelvis, ureters, and blood-vessels. With respect to the relative frequency of the different abnormalities Mr. Henry Morris-states: --I have collected fifty-four cases of various malformations which were published in the several American and English journals during the ten years 1883-1893, an analysis of which shows the following relative frequency of the different kinds of abnormalities usually met with: --11 were cases of congenital absence of one kidney! 8 congenital atrophy or ill-development of one kidney. 1 congenital atrophy or ill-development of both kidneys. 8 horse-shoe kidney. 9 misplace...
