Pip pointed up, so up is where they went.

At the end of the garden stands an apple tree. From the ground it is not a tree at all. It is a mountain with a different country at every height, so Mossy and Pip moor the teacup among the roots and start climbing, paying out a spool of thread behind them.

There is a meadow of moss growing on the trunk and a market of beetles trading under the bark. A spider web makes a bridge. Higher up, nests are stacked like a hill town, and higher still the blossom closes over their heads and the bees come to trade. From the topmost leaf, on a clear day, they can see the whole of the garden they once crossed by boat.

38 pictures, drawn to climb the page:

  • Tall scenes that carry on past the top edge
  • Thick outlines that stay put under a wax crayon
  • Every shape is closed, so the colour cannot leak out
  • No grey and no shading, so nothing swallows a whole crayon
  • One picture per sheet, and the back of each is left blank
The pages follow the climb in order, from the roots to the crown and back down again, so the book rewards being coloured front to back. Each page also stands on its own for five quiet minutes before dinner.

This is the third Mossy & Pip book, after The Teacup Voyage and The Great Indoors.
