The back garden is an ocean, if you are small enough. And in autumn, it floods.

Mossy is a garden sprite about the height of an acorn. Pip is a bird who fits on his thumb. When the rain lies over the grass and their harbour stone goes under, the two of them take the only route still open and steer their chipped teacup in through the open back door.

A house turns out to be a great deal of country when you are three inches tall. There is a mountain range of wellington boots inside the door and a jungle of coats hanging above it. The kitchen shelves stand like glass towers. Inside the clock is a cave of turning wheels, and under the floorboards lies a whole dark territory nobody has mapped.

38 pictures, drawn fuller than the first book. The scenes in this one run right out to the edges of the page:

  • Thick outlines that stay put under a wax crayon
  • Every shape is closed, so the colour cannot leak out
  • No grey and no shading, so nothing swallows a whole crayon

The pages follow the voyage in order, from the flood to the way home, so the book rewards being coloured front to back. Each page also stands on its own for five quiet minutes before dinner.
