Issues current to the times, such as slavery, inter-faith relations and a troubled economy are explored at the periphery of a story of young love and compulsory marriage within a strong family context. Readers have an opportunity to taste the uniqueness of life on the Cumberland Plateau, with its myriad waterways, colorful mixture of people, particular religious heritage, and decidedly western Appalachian practices. While the story is clean enough for older teens and is partly about teens, mature subject matter includes mild descriptions of birth and miscarriage, as well as a humorous and not-too-explicit vignette of a young couple studying an actual historic 17th Century medical manual on human reproduction, on loan to them from the village practitioner, in order to become parents.
