The Monks Of The West, From St. Benedict To St. Bernard offers a detailed exploration of Western monasticism from its origins to the era of St. Bernard. This volume delves into the profound influence of monastic orders on medieval society and the Church, examining their roles within the feudal system. Special attention is given to the life and papacy of St. Gregory, highlighting his contributions as both a monk and a pivotal figure in Church history.
Charles Forbes Montalembert's work provides valuable insights into the spiritual, intellectual, and social dimensions of monastic life during a transformative period in European history. This edition, originally published in 1879, remains a significant resource for scholars and readers interested in the history of monasticism and its enduring impact on Western civilization.
