The book is not only a memoir but also a story about Vietnam during five decades passing from the anti-French resistance to the Vietnam-American war including the conflict launched by China in 1979. It helps readers to understand a little deeper about the living conditions, culture, history, customs and habits of Vietnamese people. As mentioned in one of the book reviews, I hesitate to report that I loved the book because it was so painful and heartbreaking to read at times. That said, it is an important testament to the Vietnamese spirit and your own (the author's) indomitable will... I earnestly hope more people there and here read it.
