The ductless inverter mini-split has quietly become one of the most common pieces of comfort equipment a technician will ever touch - and one of the least understood. Most techs can install a line set and pull a vacuum. Far fewer can explain why a suction pressure that would signal a fault on a fixed-speed system is perfectly normal on an inverter running at low speed, or read a pressure-enthalpy diagram well enough to separate a charge problem from an airflow problem before they've burned an afternoon guessing.
This handbook closes that gap. Written for the practicing HVAC/R technician and field engineer who already know their way around a manifold gauge set and a multimeter, it builds from the physics up: the vapor-compression cycle and the P-h diagram that makes it a working diagnostic tool, not a classroom abstraction - the power electronics inside the inverter drive itself: rectification, PFC, the IGBT/IPM bridge, PWM, and sensorless PMSM motor control - system components, controls, and inter-unit communication - load calculation, installation, and commissioning - and a full diagnostic arc across error codes, electrical/electronic faults, and refrigerant-side faults.
Critically, this edition treats the refrigerant transition every technician now has to navigate. R-410A dominated the field for two decades, but under the AIM Act, new U.S. equipment as of January 2025 must use refrigerants under a 700 GWP threshold - which means R-32 and R-454B, both mildly flammable A2L refrigerants. This book covers R-410A because a vast installed base still runs on it, but builds in the A2L safety practices, charge limits, blend glide, and fractionation rules that older reference titles simply predate.
Every chapter closes with fully worked examples and practice problems - in both SI and inch-pound units - with a boxed answer key, so the math of superheat, subcooling, COP, and mass flow becomes something you can actually do at the truck, not just read about.
