Eleven-year-old Lance Callahan is a good-natured boy with loving parents and little responsibility, enjoying suburban life in Wichita, Kansas. But when his older sister, Lori, pulls a teenage stunt and causes a family upset, both kids are sent to spend the summer with their paternal grandparents in Clinton, Arkansas. Blindsided by the consequences of her own doing, sharp-tongued Lori loathes the idea of spending the summer in rural Arkansas. Lance, however, is thrilled with the plan, envisioning a glorious summer of fishing, bike-riding, and exploring new territory.
Grandparents Gigi and Papaw are delighted to have their grandchildren for the summer. Lance settles in and quickly befriends some local boys his age. Lori takes longer to adjust but eventually comes around, allured by the charm of the small community. The kids flourish in their new surroundings while bonding with spunky, outspoken Gigi and mild-mannered, predictable Papaw. But when a crime takes place in the community, Lance finds himself face to face with the sheriff, triggering a roller coaster of emotions in a boy who wants nothing more than to fit in and avoid confrontation. As he struggles to make grown-up decisions about matters unfamiliar to him, Lance turns to Papaw for help. Meanwhile, the ever-confident Lori has her own difficulties, discovering that she has much to learn about love and romance. With humor and nostalgia, and in his own voice, Lance recalls that special summer of his boyhood - the one which taught him the value of family, the power of community, and the integrity that comes with being true to oneself. Readers, if you have adolescent children or teens in your lives, you will appreciate this tender and thoughtful story which promises to make you laugh and leave you smiling at the end. Also from
