Native to the southeastern United States, namely the watersheds of the Mississippi and Mobile rivers, is the Mississippi Map Turtle (Graptemys pseudogeographica kohnii). The name comes from the turtles' unusual appearance, which is typified by the detailed green and yellow markings on their shells that resemble contour lines on a map. Along with a number of other map turtle species, they are members of the Emydidae family.

Male Mississippi Map Turtles normally have carapace lengths of 3.5 to 5 inches (9-13 cm), while females can reach up to 6 to 10 inches (15-25 cm). The turtles' bodies are generally modest to medium in size. Intricate golden lines adorn their typically olive to dark brown shells, giving them a distinctive and alluring appearance. Their characteristic appearance is further enhanced by the fact that their skin is usually greenish-gray with yellow spots or stripes.

These turtles are mostly found in bayous with sandy or muddy bottoms, slow-moving rivers, and streams in the wild. They favor areas with lots of greenery and submerged logs or branches so they can hide and enjoy the sun. Known for their exceptional swimming skills, Mississippi Map Turtles are frequently spotted lounging on logs or rocks close to the water's edge.

Natural Habitat and History

Throughout their habitat, which includes portions of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and potentially surrounding states, Mississippi Map Turtles have adapted to a variety of aquatic settings. They especially like settings with calm or slowly flowing water, like ponds, oxbow lakes, and peaceful riverbanks.

These turtles are opportunistic omnivores that consume a wide range of aquatic plants, algae, insects, tiny fish, and crustaceans in their natural environment. Being diurnal, they are most active during the day and spend a large portion of their time searching for food or absorbing sunlight to help them stay warm.

Mississippi Map Turtles have grown in popularity as pets because of their attractive look and generally placid disposition. But their widespread appeal has also sparked worries about pollution, habitat degradation, and illicit harvesting from the wild, which has prompted conservation initiatives to save their native habitats and populations.
