A 'book'/collection of words not necessarily for the faint hearted. Its sometimes sucker punch delivery cutting through minds rhetoric unapologetically and relentlessly lovingly, in the only way true love can. The author, with her own, and the privilege of bearing witness to others' experiences of emotional pain and suffering, lays us bare, in trust that we will realise, sooner rather than later, the true joy of giving, loving and living from who we really are.
Why am I, as in this one, writing this little 'book' and why should you even bother opening it?
Does 40 years of exposure, to mental ill health, first as a psychiatric nurse, then a cognitive therapist and university lecturer in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) alongside training and qualifying as a clinical psychologist, author and co-author of a number of CBT texts translated into 5 different languages for those experiencing mental ill health and those providing therapy, give some kind of qualification to do so?
Or, does early childhood exposure to emotional neglect, bearing witness to adults, my parents, being violent to each other, subtle and less so subtle sexual grooming in childhood, my father taking his own life when I was 12 and he only 38, the beauty of a horse called Bounty, chronic low self-esteem, sexual promiscuity from 15 to 28, bulimia until my mid-20s, a failed marriage by my early 20s, the wonder, privilege and gift of three incredible children, now adults and the loss of four that did not make it through, the guidance of Princess, a Welsh collie, my partner of 31 years, now husband and more recently diagnosed as Autistic, who has and continues to provide me with the most consistent and sometimes intense learning opportunities, and now living with/caring for, my Mother who, three years ago had a hemorrhagic stroke, then a year on a mixed diagnosis of Alzheimer's and vascular dementia, provide qualification to do so?
The advent of mindfulness and compassionate mind philosophies/teachings within the field of psychology has led me to a more committed curiosity and practice of love and kindness. It is without doubt that the development of this little 'book' is both guided and shaped by these fundamental principles embedded in natural law. May this too offer qualification for the production of this little book?
Whether you should or should not read this little 'book', is actually irrelevant. More to the point is whether you will to or will not to.
Why me? Why not me? Why not you?
