Fundraising is often misunderstood. Many leaders fear it, avoid it, or treat it as a necessary burden. But what if asking is not about money at all? What if asking is actually ministry?
In The Ministry of Asking, nonprofit leader and spiritual writer David F. Sellery reframes one of the most uncomfortable responsibilities of leadership and reveals its deeper purpose. Asking is not manipulation. It is not pressure. It is an invitation into mission, generosity, and transformation.
Building on the vision introduced in The Heart of Giving, this book explores the spiritual and relational dimensions of fundraising. Through practical insight, real-world experience, and thoughtful reflection, Sellery shows how asking can become an act of stewardship, trust, and partnership.
Inside this book, readers will discover:
- Why asking is essential to healthy mission-driven organizations
- How generosity grows through relationships rather than transactions
- The spiritual foundations of fundraising
- Practical ways to approach donors with confidence and integrity
- How leaders can overcome fear, hesitation, and discomfort around asking
- A healthier model of fundraising rooted in purpose and faith
Drawing from years of experience working with faith-based and nonprofit organizations, Sellery offers a perspective that is both practical and deeply reflective. He demonstrates that when asking is done with authenticity, clarity, and respect, it becomes something far more meaningful than a financial request. It becomes a ministry.
This book is written for:
- Nonprofit leaders
- Development professionals
- Pastors and ministry teams
- Board members
- Anyone responsible for sustaining mission-driven work
Whether you are new to fundraising or have spent years in development work, The Ministry of Asking offers a refreshing and thoughtful approach that transforms the act of asking into an opportunity for connection, generosity, and shared purpose.
Because when people are invited into meaningful work, they don't just give.
They participate in something bigger than themselves.
