Excerpt: ... BOOK VIII. ARGUMENT. Michael, Raphael, and their companions, returning to- Jesus, narrate their success. The angels thereon praise Jesus. Moses and Elias having restored the earthly Jerusalem, saints repair thither from all lands. Jesus descends from his pavilion, and meets and blesses them. Appoints them to share in his kingdom. Sends throughout the earth chiefs of Art, to be prophets of new styles. Gabriel, dismissed as herald, returning, re- counts their success. At his recital the saint and angel choirs strike their harps anew. Jesus dismisses heralds to recall the commissioned saints. They return, and Jesus sends forth his heralds to proclaim a Jubilee. MICHAEL, Eaphael, and their companions, Having fulfilled their mission, back returned To Jesus, and to Him, and their compeers Who stood around His throne, all they had done, And their success, narrated. Michael thus: Earth is once more a peaceful paradise, And man its peaceful, prosperous occupant, Happy in universal innocence, To God, himself, and nature reconciled. The creatures that around him live and move, Upon the land, in water, and the air, With him are happy too, and innocent; The useful kind, those savage once subdued, No injury from any he receives, But finds in each a servant or a friend; While every shady foliage-thickened bush Becomes the temple of winged melodists, Which need no brass-barred cage to keep them nigh, And make their song secure, secure themselves. Beneath the shadow of oerarching trees, While through their spreading branches serpents creep, Or, pendent thence, gracefully oscillate And intertwine, their variegated hues Mingling and glittering, like festoons of flowers, Young children meet and play, and round about Their moss and grass-fringed bases bask or run, Trackin...
