The book delves deep into the life of Jose Joaquin De Herrera, who was a military leader and politician during the Mexican War of Independence, the Mexican-American War, and the Mexican Civil War. Cotner provides a detailed account of Herrera's early life, his military campaigns, and his political career. The book also explores Herrera's role in the establishment of the Mexican Constitution of 1824, his presidency from 1844 to 1845, and his involvement in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War. The author uses primary sources such as letters, government documents, and newspaper articles to paint a vivid picture of Herrera's life and times. Cotner also provides a critical analysis of Herrera's political ideology, his relationship with other Mexican leaders, and his legacy in Mexican history.
