Middlemarch is a novel written by George Eliot, first published in 1871-72. The book is set in the fictional town of Middlemarch, and follows the lives of several characters as they navigate the social and political landscape of 19th century England. The story is primarily focused on the young and idealistic Dorothea Brooke, who is determined to make a meaningful difference in the world through her marriage to the elderly and scholarly Reverend Edward Casaubon. However, her plans are complicated by her growing attraction to the charming and ambitious Will Ladislaw, as well as the various scandals and intrigues that unfold around her. Alongside Dorothea's story, the novel also explores the lives of other characters, including the wealthy and self-absorbed Rosamond Vincy, the ambitious and manipulative politician Nicholas Bulstrode, and the kind-hearted doctor Tertius Lydgate. Through these characters and their intersecting stories, Eliot offers a rich and nuanced portrait of Victorian society, exploring themes of love, marriage, ambition, morality, and social change. With its intricate plot, vivid characters, and incisive social commentary, Middlemarch is widely regarded as one of the greatest novels in the English language.Miss Brooke had that kind of beauty which seems to be thrown into relief by poor dress. Her hand and wrist were so finely formed that she could wear sleeves not less bare of style than those in which the Blessed Virgin appeared to Italian painters. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
