Micah is a German Shepherd puppy who dreams of being a hero. Anita is a twelve-year-old girl loses her sight after a devastating accident. Together, they embark on a journey of perseverance, determination, and self-discovery.
Micah worries about his future -- what kind of hero can a gentle German Shepherd be? His littermates wrestle, roughhouse, and tease him for preferring to chase butterflies. Then he fails police school-he excels in obedience but refuses to attack. Sent home in disgrace, he believes he'll never have a purpose. But when he must protect the farm and his family from armed rustlers, he discovers that true bravery isn't about aggression -- it's about standing up for what's right.
Micah's journey doesn't end there. Instead of becoming a police dog, he begins training as a guide dog-one of the most challenging and noble roles a dog can have. By the time he meets Anita, he has already learned that courage comes in many forms.
Meanwhile, Anita is struggling to rebuild her confidence. After losing her sight in an accident involving a stray dog, she withdraws, afraid to trust and unsure how to navigate a sighted world. The cane she relies on makes her feel vulnerable and exposed-an easy target for bullies. Her parents suggest a guide dog, but Anita is terrified.
Their worlds collide when they're paired as a team. Micah must prove he can be the guide and protector Anita needs, and Anita must face her trauma and learn to trust the very creature she fears and blames for changing her life.
Together, they embark on a journey of trust, determination, and unconditional love-one that leads them somewhere neither ever expected: to a place where blind children can learn to ride ponies, proving there are no limits to what they can do.
For ages 8-14, Micah's Wish is an inspiring, beautifully illustrated chapter book. Themes of disability awareness, perseverance, and the extraordinary connection between humans and animals make this story an excellent addition to bookstore, school and library collections.
