Venturo Sable is worth eleven billion dollars and cannot sleep.
He owns a house in Rome he has never seen and a boat that eats a fortune every July. Two hundred people are on his payroll. His daughter does not return his calls. By every metric he is well. He aches.
So when a charming, ruined young heir asks him for forty million dollars - in order to look like a man who does not need forty million dollars - Venturo says yes the way he has said yes for thirty years: instantly, generously, and in front of witnesses.
To fund it, he walks into a deconsecrated church in Tribeca and borrows the money from Lady Mordant Vex.
She is the finest short-seller in America. Twenty years ago, Venturo ended her career with a single sentence. Not cruelly - warmly. Nine men laughed, a newspaper printed the tone rather than the facts, and she did not work again for three years. Every number in her file had been correct. No correction was ever issued.
She lends him the forty million at zero interest. The contract runs to one page. There's no second page, she tells him while he signs. I've found that's where people stop reading.
The terms: if Sable & Crown misses its published December mark by a single basis point, Venturo forfeits his chairmanship - and his seat on his late wife's trust, the seat that decides who may court his daughter.
He signs it laughing. He signs because the terms are absurd, because people are watching, and because he has never in his life been able to be observed to hesitate.
Then the quarter turns. The miss is seven basis points.
A five-act comedy with real teeth- The three caskets are three sealed term sheets - GROWTH, VALUE and DISTRESSED. The right answer is the ugly one. In four years, not one man has been able to reach for it in front of witnesses.
- The trial is an enforcement hearing, and the pound of flesh is a lifetime bar from the industry - because money only takes what a man has, and a bar takes what he is.
- Counsel for the defence is a lawyer nobody has met, whom the defendant fails to recognise, for a reason that turns out to be the quiet tragedy of his entire life.
The moneyed speak in blank verse. The servants, the honest and the funny speak in prose. Twenty scenes, a cast of twenty-three, and a comic engine assembled from Shakespeare's own parts - separated twins, a forged letter, a fatal bond, a courtroom reversal - aimed squarely at private aviation, family offices, charity galas, and the specific cruelty of people who have never once been billed for their own charm.
I'm not going to do anything clever to you. I'm going to do the one thing nobody in your life has ever done. I'm going to hold you to your word.
Eleven billion dollars. One absurd contract. And a daughter nobody thought to look at.
