He danced with Borovansky. He trained with Rambert. He built South Australia's first ballet company. He shaped generations. He lived for art.
Mentor of Dance is the sweeping story of Maxwell Collis - one of Australia's most influential yet unsung ballet pioneers. From his early days touring with the Borovansky Ballet, to the founding of the South Australian Ballet Theatre, to his later years with Ballet Victoria, Max's life traces the evolution of Australian ballet through the eyes of a man who lived it.
Told with intimacy, lyricism, and historical depth, and illustrated with 43 rare photographs, this memoir reveals the dancer, the teacher, the choreographer, and the gentle soul behind the legend. It is a portrait of a life devoted to beauty, generosity, and the belief that dance can transform the human spirit.
A story of courage, artistry, and the magic of mentorship - this is the legacy of the Bluebird.
