Men of Iron is a historical novel written by Howard Pyle, first published in 1891. The story is set in medieval England during the reign of King Henry IV and follows the life of a young squire named Myles Falworth. Myles is the son of a disgraced nobleman who was stripped of his title and lands by the king's advisor, Lord de Vere. Myles is determined to restore his family's honor and regain their rightful place in society.Myles is sent to train as a knight at the castle of Sir James Lee, a renowned warrior and friend of his father. There, he faces many challenges and obstacles, including the jealousy of other squires and the cruelty of Sir James' son, Wilfred. Myles also falls in love with Lady Alice, Sir James' daughter, but their relationship is forbidden due to their difference in social status. As Myles progresses in his training, he discovers a plot by Lord de Vere to overthrow the king and seize the throne for himself. Myles and his fellow knights must use their skills and bravery to defend the king and prevent de Vere from carrying out his plan.Men of Iron is a classic tale of chivalry, honor, and adventure. It is a vivid portrayal of medieval life and the code of conduct that governed knights and noblemen. Pyle's writing style is engaging and immersive, transporting readers to a bygone era of knights and castles. The novel has been praised for its historical accuracy and its depiction of the ideals of the medieval knight.1891. Illustrated by the author. Pyle is best known for the children's books that he wrote and illustrated. It is from his famous Book of Pirates that our present-day concept of pirates has come. School children still read his Men of Iron, The Story of King Arthur and his Knights, The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood, and many other tales. In Men of Iron young Myles Falworth wins a reputation for courage and independence while still in training at the castle of the great Earl of Mackworth. But one day he discovers that his blind father had been condemned for treason and is still being hunted by a powerful enemy who is close to the King. To challenge the King's champion means certain death. Should he risk all to win back his family's honor?
