Excerpt: ... cause of foreign missions. Some of the earlier missionaries, Goodell of Turkey, and Temple of Malta, were his classmates. Thurston of the Sandwich Islands, preceded him by one year. And others of like spirit, were just starting out for their distant fields, filled with fervent zeal. Mr. Lockwood's enthusiastic nature was aroused, and he expressed a great desire to devote himself to this work, but circumstances turned his steps in a different direction, although as long as he lived, the cause was dear to his heart. Some extracts from his journal at this time, show the aspirations and longings of his soul. Saturday, December 20th, 1817. I do hunger and thirst after spiritual knowledge and growth in grace. Oh, for more perfect conformity to the divine image, for more purity in my motives. 'Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.' Sabbath, 21st. I hope I may always this week, and hereafter, keep in mind that I am consecrated to God, and that I ought to do everything which I undertake, with a single eye to God's glory. I want to be freed from selfishness, and to act from 'holy motives. I want an abiding, permanent sense of my obligations. I want spiritual mindedness, heavenly mindedness, ardent love for immortal souls, and the promotion of Christ's kingdom. Friday, January 30///, 1818.
