Among the many letters received at that time full of kind sympathy for us and mourning for him, I shall only select a few which contain some allusion to past remembrance of him. From General R. Alexander to Mrs. Hammond. 6, Marloes Road, October 3, 1877. .... I have sometimes reminded your beloved brother-inlaw of the little incident of our first meeting at the Cape. I was riding an unruly horse, that would not go over a very narrow bridge. He kindly came up to me, spoke a few words of courtesy, and putting his horse by the side of mine conducted me quietly to where I would go. In after time how often has he helped others in the narrow way and over the straight bridge from time to eternity! What holy enjoyment have I had while sitting by his side as he was present to help us onward and upward in our Bible readings; and again, how gratefully can I look back to the privilege of admission to his sick room, where, with the given grace of prayer and supplication, we realized (Mai. iii. 16), 'Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another; and the Lord hearkened, and heard it;' and looking forward to (Heb. x. 37), 'He that shall come will come, and will not tarry.'
