Memorial Exercises in Honor of Henry Williams Sage is a book published by Cornell University in memory of one of its most prominent benefactors, Henry Williams Sage. The book includes a collection of speeches, addresses, and tributes given at a memorial service held in Sage's honor on May 9, 1897, at Sage Chapel on the Cornell campus. Henry Williams Sage was a wealthy businessman and philanthropist who played a significant role in the development of Cornell University. He served as a trustee of the university for over 30 years and made numerous donations that helped to fund the construction of several campus buildings, including Sage Chapel, Sage Hall, and the university library. The memorial exercises featured in the book include speeches by prominent figures such as Andrew Dickson White, the first president of Cornell University, and Timothy Dwight, the president of Yale University. These speeches provide insight into Sage's life, his contributions to Cornell, and his impact on the wider community. The book also includes a biographical sketch of Henry Williams Sage, written by his longtime friend and colleague, Charles Kendall Adams. This sketch provides a detailed account of Sage's life, from his early years as a businessman to his later years as a philanthropist and civic leader. Overall, Memorial Exercises in Honor of Henry Williams Sage is a tribute to one of Cornell University's most influential benefactors and a testament to the enduring legacy of his generosity and vision. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
