Memoirs of Edward Alleyn, Founder of Dulwich College is a biography written by J. Payne Collier about the life of Edward Alleyn, a prominent actor and theatre entrepreneur in the 16th and 17th centuries. The book covers Alleyn's early life, his rise to fame as a leading actor in the Elizabethan era, his marriage to Henslowe's stepdaughter, and his eventual retirement from the stage to focus on his business ventures. The biography also delves into Alleyn's philanthropic efforts, including his founding of Dulwich College, a school for poor boys, and his involvement in charitable organizations. Collier draws on a variety of sources, including Alleyn's own writings, to provide a detailed and nuanced portrait of this fascinating historical figure. The book is an important resource for anyone interested in the history of theatre, philanthropy, and social justice in early modern England. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
