Memoirs of a Midget is a novel by Walter de la Mare that tells the story of Miss M., a woman who is only 39 inches tall. The novel is written in the form of a memoir, with Miss M. recounting her life story to an unnamed narrator. Miss M. was born into a wealthy family, but her small stature made her an outcast from a young age. Her parents were ashamed of her and sent her away to live with her aunt, who was kind but also saw her as a burden. Despite her difficult childhood, Miss M. is a resilient and resourceful person who is determined to live life to the fullest. As she grows up, Miss M. becomes a successful writer and artist, and she travels the world, meeting a variety of interesting people along the way. She also has several romantic relationships, including a passionate affair with a married man. Throughout the novel, Miss M. reflects on her life and the challenges she has faced as a person of small stature. She also muses on the nature of identity, beauty, and the human condition. Memoirs of a Midget is a thought-provoking and beautifully written novel that explores themes of otherness, self-discovery, and the search for meaning in life.1922. de la Mare wrote numerous novels, short stories, essays, and poems. He was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Memoirs of a Midget. Miss M., the narrator of these fictional memoirs, is a tiny young woman with a passion for shells, fossils, flints, butterflies, and stuffed animals. Miss M. tells of her early life as a dreamy orphan and, in particular, of her tempestuous twentieth year in which she falls in love with a beautiful and ambitious full-sized woman and is courted by a male dwarf. Concluding that she must choose either to simply tolerate her difference or grow callous to it, Miss M. resolves to become independent by offering herself up as a spectacle in a circus.
