Twelve notebooks, written in pencil, recovered from a rented room six weeks after the tenant stopped paying for it. The man who filled them served nineteen years in a mobile task force and was never cleared to keep a record of anything.

There is a place where names do not survive. Not the person - the name and everything fastened to it. The file. The photograph. The space a person occupied inside other people, closed over so cleanly that nobody feels a draught.
His unit learned to work under false names and to cut their real ones into a concrete wall, in the belief that they were making something that would outlast them.
They were wrong about what the wall was for.
One chapter for every name he lost. A medic who said his name out loud to save him. A man who could not read, and was the only one it could never touch. A woman who spent fourteen weeks in secret learning how to give him back something he had never had.
His own name is not in these pages. It has been torn out, erased, inked over or left blank at every point where it should appear, and the archivist who compiled the collection notes that this has stopped being treated as an oversight.
