Not illustrated.1842 Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. DEPARTURE FOR MADEIRA RESIDENCE THERE. On Saturday, 28th October 1837, Mr Halley sailed from Glasgow, accompanied by his sister. His route was from the Clyde to Dublin, and thence to Falmouth, the station of the packet to Brazil. We insert, from a letter to his father, a brief account of these first stages of the journey. 'Falmouth, 4th November 1837. 'My dear Father, --I ought certainly to have written you yesterday, as I promised to write immediately on arriving here, and we got ashore yesterday morning. But I was very much knocked up with our voyage, and thought I would be better able to do it after a night's repose. 'We have much cause, then, I am happy to say, for thankfulness, on account of the state in which we have been enabled to finish this first part of our voyage. We reached Dublin on Sabbath morning, having been twenty-six hours on board the Mercury. Janet was very sick. I got to my berth before it reached that point with me, and was happily preserved. The steamer was very full; and the heat in our berths was almost suffocating. But a little fresh air on Sabbath morning (which was a shining one) set us all right again, and we got ashore in tolerably good VOYAGE TO FALMOUTH. 121 spirits. By the steward's advice, we went to the Imperial Hotel, which he said was good and very moderate. We found, however, that his views of moderation differed from ours. Nevertheless, we were certainly very comfortable. On Monday, it rained so much, that we could do no more than take our places in Wednesday's steamer for Falmouth; but on Tuesday we had a good clear sky, and saw a little of Dublin.
