In this blessed volume he beheld the star that will never disappoint the hope it awakens; its ray is never dimmed, and it knows no going down; its cheering light streams on through ages of tempest and change. Earth may be darkened, systems convulsed, planets shaken from their spheres, but this star will pour its steady, undiminished light. The eye that is turned to it will gladden in its tears; the countenance that it lights, sorrow can never wholly overcast. The footstep that falls in its radiance finds no gloom, even at the portal of the grave. Mr. Meneely's life showed the value of the Scriptures, in the comfort they afforded himself not only, but in the good he was instrumental in doing to others.. He endeavored to do good to all within (he sphere of his influence. He was taught by the word of God, and he acted out the principles of his profession. The pious Cecil said, Whatever definition men have given of religion, I can find none so accurately descriptive of it as this, --that it is such a belief of the Bible as maintains a living influence on the heart. Men may speculate, criticise, admire, dispute about, doubt, or believe the Bible; but the religious man is such because he so believes it, as to carry habitually a practical sense of its truths in his mind.
