Melite: A Comedy is a play written by the French playwright Pierre Corneille in 1776. The play is set in ancient Greece and follows the story of a young man named Clitandre who is in love with a woman named Melite. However, Melite's father, Euphron, has promised her hand in marriage to another man named Philiste. Clitandre must find a way to win Melite's heart and overcome the obstacles in his path, including the scheming Philiste and the meddling of Melite's sister, Climene. The play is a lighthearted and witty comedy that explores themes of love, honor, and family loyalty. Corneille's writing is characterized by his use of classical references and his skillful use of language to create memorable characters and witty dialogue. Melite: A Comedy remains a popular work of French literature and is still performed today. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
