Photography as a spiritual practice is a journey of contemplative observation of everyday life. It can be a form of meditation that sharpens attention, fosters connection, and encourages a sense of wonder through the practice of Visio Divina (sacred seeing), where one looks for deeper meaning and spiritual insight through the lens of a camera.
The practice encourages the photographer to slow down, observe the surroundings deeply, and clear the mind of distractions and preconceptions. This deliberate observation helps counteract the busyness, noise, and distractions of modern life.
There is an understanding and acceptance of the impermanence and imperfection of life while finding beauty in it. The Japanese call this Wabi-Sabi. It is an aesthetic of appreciating the beauty of imperfection, transience, and the natural cycle of growth and decay. This practice encourages finding wonder in everyday subjects and accepting the world as it is, rather than chasing the dramatic or extraordinary illusions of life.
