Built on sweeping landscapes, poetic truth, and the quiet resilience of the human spirit, Medicine Horse explores themes of freedom, forgiveness and cultural identity.
On a ranch operating as a mustang sanctuary, two worlds collide when a woman mourning her past and a Lakota man guarding his future are brought together by an ill-fated accident. Both must learn to navigate the present together in order to reconcile the past in this poignant tale of grief and regret, tolerance and atonement, and the invisible threads that bind us across differing cultures and histories.
This gritty, contemporary western drama delivers deep emotional resonance to readers of authors like Paulette Jiles (News of the World). About This 10th Anniversary EditionWelcome to this special tenth-anniversary edition. A decade ago, I set out to write a story that directly confronted the painful realities of racism and championed the vital journey toward healing and unity. To provoke deep thought about these historical divides, I originally chose a raw, jarring title: No Dogs or Indians.
Over the last ten years, conversations about language, history, and healing have evolved in a wonderful way. I have listened closely to my readers. While the original title was meant to expose the ugliness of prejudice, I realized that true healing requires us to elevate symbols of strength rather than repeat words of division.
To honor the true spirit of this story and celebrate a decade of shared journeys with my readers, this edition comes to you with a new name: Medicine Horse. In many traditions, the Medicine Horse represents healing, purpose, spiritual power, and the courage to carry us through difficult terrain. It is a symbol o f moving forward.
This new title reflects the deepest heartbeat of the book-not just the battle against racism, but the triumphant journey
toward overcoming it.
I thank readers for walking this path with me for ten years. Whether you are opening these pages for the first time or
returning to them after a decade, I hope Medicine Horse brings you inspiration, perspective, and hope for a more
united world.
