Measure for Measure is one of William Shakespeare's darkest comedies, a searching play of law, mercy, desire, corruption, disguise, and moral judgment. When Duke Vincentio leaves Vienna in the hands of the severe Angelo, long-neglected laws are suddenly enforced with brutal rigidity. Claudio is sentenced to death for fornication, and his sister Isabella, a novice nun, pleads for mercy. Angelo then reveals the hypocrisy beneath his public virtue, offering to spare Claudio only if Isabella yields her chastity to him.
Often called one of Shakespeare's problem plays, Measure for Measure resists simple classification. It contains comic devices-disguise, substitution, reversals, hidden authority-but its central questions are grave: how justice should be tempered by mercy, what happens when rulers police private morality, how public virtue can mask private corruption, and whether human institutions can judge human frailty fairly.
