McDuffie's Discovery Of The Natural Causes For The Variations Of The Magnetic Needle Of The Compass is a book written by William Anderson Guthrie and published in 1910. The book explores the natural causes for the variations in the magnetic needle of the compass, which had long been a mystery to navigators and scientists alike. The author, Guthrie, presents the findings of McDuffie, a Scottish mariner who discovered that the variations in the magnetic needle were caused by the presence of iron ore deposits and other magnetic materials in the earth's crust. McDuffie's discovery was a significant breakthrough in navigation, as it allowed sailors to navigate more accurately and avoid potential hazards caused by incorrect readings of the compass.Guthrie's book provides a detailed explanation of McDuffie's discovery and its implications for navigation. It also includes a discussion of the history of the compass and its use in navigation, as well as a description of the scientific principles underlying the magnetic field and its effects on the compass needle.Overall, McDuffie's Discovery Of The Natural Causes For The Variations Of The Magnetic Needle Of The Compass is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of navigation and the science of magnetism. It sheds light on a previously mysterious phenomenon and highlights the importance of scientific inquiry and experimentation in solving real-world problems. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
