Max Havelaar: Or The Coffee Auctions Of The Dutch Trading Company is a novel written by Multatuli and published in 1868. The book is a critique of the Dutch colonial system in the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia) and the exploitation of the local population by the Dutch government and trading companies. The story follows the character of Max Havelaar, an idealistic Dutch civil servant who is appointed to a post in the remote Javanese district of Lebak. There, he witnesses the corruption and abuse of power by the local Dutch officials and the suffering of the Javanese people who are forced to work on coffee plantations owned by the Dutch Trading Company. Havelaar tries to bring about change by speaking out against the injustices, but is met with resistance from his superiors and colleagues. The novel is also notable for its unconventional structure, with the narrative being interrupted by the author's own commentary on the colonial system and the role of literature in social criticism. Max Havelaar is considered a landmark work of Dutch literature and a significant contribution to the anti-colonial movement. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
