This book is the result of a keynote lecture I gave at a very productive International Virtual Conference held in Mexico in 2021. In it, I discuss the teaching of mathematics and the development of thinking in elementary education-a topic of undeniable timeliness, relevance, and significance. My goal is to stimulate your minds, to spark your curiosity, your doubts, and your need to ask questions, to find out, and to investigate how to do things better. I highlight the usefulness of mathematics for solving problems and learning to think. I demonstrate that mathematics is essential for mental development from a pedagogical perspective, but also from a biological understanding of how a lack of mathematical education affects the brain. I explore the multitude of conceptual, procedural, and attitudinal aspects that make up the content of mathematics instruction, as well as problem-solving procedures-particularly those of a heuristic nature. I discuss work with standards for mathematical processes and a characterization of mathematics learning. I also introduce examples of theories of mathematics education applied to K-12 education.
