This volume presents a curated collection of Matchless motorcycle advertisements from 1907 to 1966, tracing the brand's evolution from its early days under Collier & Sons to its final years under the AMC banner before production finally ceased in 1966. While Matchless briefly produced small two-stroke models, it became renowned for its high-quality, medium- to large-capacity single and twin-cylinder machines.
Before the digital age, when television and the internet had yet to dominate, magazines were the primary medium for motorcycle advertising. High-street dealerships were plentiful, and print adverts had to be bold, persuasive, and visually striking. Successful campaigns combined aspirational imagery, compelling headlines, and clear value propositions-whether emphasising performance, reliability, economy, or the thrill of adventure.
Throughout the decades, advertising styles evolved:
1920s-1930s: Bold claims, hand-drawn illustrations, and direct language, such as Matchless: The Perfect Passenger Machine. The Matchless adverts regularly featured their 'big' machines fitted with sidecars
1940s-1950s: A post-war focus on practicality, affordability, and trust, with adverts depicting real-life scenarios like commuting and touring. Matchless played a crucial wartime role, producing some 80,000 G3 and G3/L models for British and Allied forces with their adverts using the slogan Matchless in action.
1960s: The era of freedom and individuality, with slogans like Life's Fun with a Matchless, reflecting a shift from rugged utility to stylish and sporting appeal.
Despite its racing and off-road competition successes, Matchless, like much of the British motorcycle industry, succumbed to foreign competition, poor management, and a failure to adapt to changing markets in the 1960s.
This book is not a historical narrative but a visually rich reference guide, offering a chronological record of over 385 original press adverts, each presented full-page and annotated with publication details and date. All images have been scanned from original sources and to keep production costs down reproduced in monochrome, with original colour adverts clearly noted. Each entry also includes an 'Ad Ref' which refers to the record number in the 'Rockers Bike Ads' master database.
This volume is a must-have for classic motorcycle enthusiasts, collectors, and historians alike and captures the spirit of Matchless through the very adverts that once inspired riders across generations.
