Matarse CÃrculo is a series of poems that recycles the language and mythos of a Cold War spy novel to reveal the underlying assumptions and structures of contemporary global militarism. The title is a non-idiomatic mash-up of Spanish that could be interpreted as Circle, kill yourself, or The circle that kills, referring to cycles of political violence and their justifications. The collection aims to subvert default assumptions about wars of aggression and colonialism through startling lyricism and word-associations, by turns tragic and farcical.
Matarse CÃrculo includes 38 color plates which reveal the generative and evolutionary process of the texts and their origin.
This project was conceived and produced in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico, in 2022, with an old Olivetti typewriter. It was first published in a hand-made edition of twelve copies.
