Masters Of War: Otto Skorzeny

OTTO SKORZENY

The Most Dangerous Man In Europe

He rescued a fallen dictator from a mountaintop fortress by crash-landing gliders on ground no pilot had ever dared attempt. He forced the abdication of a European head of state without firing a shot in anger. And when his luck finally ran out in the frozen forests of the Ardennes, he stood trial for his life, and walked free.

Otto Skorzeny was a Viennese engineer who became, almost by accident, the architect of modern special operations warfare. Wounded out of conventional combat on the road to Moscow, he built from nothing a doctrine of precision, economy, and psychological dominance that would carry a handful of soldiers to victories entire armies could not achieve, and, at its limits, expose exactly how far daring alone could carry a plan built on too little time and too few resources.

This volume in the Masters of War series traces Skorzeny's life from the dueling fraternities of interwar Vienna through the Gran Sasso raid that made him a legend, the Budapest operation that revealed a subtler and more dangerous kind of skill, and the Ardennes gamble that very nearly cost him everything, followed by acquittal, escape, and a second life rebuilt in the shadows of Cold War Madrid, Cairo, and beyond.

Masters of War judges its subjects on one measure alone: the skill with which they made war, not the justice of the causes they served. This book does not excuse. It does not condemn. It looks, with unflinching clarity, at what Otto Skorzeny actually did, the operations that succeeded through genuine brilliance, the one that failed under its own weight, and the legal and moral reckoning that followed him for the rest of his life, and lets the record speak for itself.

A masterclass in commando doctrine. A cautionary tale in operational overreach. And the strange, unresolved portrait of a man who reinvented himself again and again, from soldier to fugitive to statesman's confidant, without ever quite settling on who he wanted history to remember.
