The book provides a detailed description of the major artists and their works, including their themes, motifs, and symbolism. Fenollos also delves into the cultural and social context that influenced the development of the Ukioye school, as well as the impact of Western art on Japanese art during the Meiji period. The book is richly illustrated with over 100 black and white plates and includes an extensive glossary of Japanese terms.
