As Right Angles, Horizontals, and Perpendiculars are indispensable to elaborate the ideas of the operative Mason, so are they no less indispensable to the expression of the symbolic purposes of the speculative Mason, the mental conception and its physical execution often laying in the same plane. The Horizontal and the Perpendicular by their transverse union forming the Right Angle prompt the query: What principle in Nature is it capable of right line and angularizing influences? Can it in truth be any Force different from the mental endowment of man? Answering that it can not, it follows that the mind of man being, as it must be, electric, the principle in Nature responsive to our query, is the Electric Principle, which view is remarkably confirmed by the symbolic uses of the Triple Altar Lights, the Bible, Square, and Compass, as had to the end of the neophyte's mental illumination at the moment' when the Grand Masonic Shock is given, which is strictly referable to this principle, and to naught beside. Yet, to instance Cosmically, note the zigzag of the Electric Fhsh in the heavens and learn therefrom the capability of the Electric Fluid to angularize. And yet again, as the Right Angles, Horizontals, and Per pendiculars are designs that appertain to the Trestle-Board, and the Trestle-Board is constructed to rest on a frame of Three Legs (nothing being in vain in Freemasonry), are we in unreasonableness of conjecture to suppose a recondite purpose is served in the choice and employment of just this number of supports? And can these supports find better interpretation than by the Three Prime Rays, illustrated by the Three Altar Lights, operative as those rays are throughout the Cosmos?
