Martin Eden is a novel written by American author Jack London, first published in 1909. The story follows the life of Martin Eden, a young man from a working-class background who dreams of becoming a writer and achieving success and fame. Martin meets Ruth Morse, a young woman from a wealthy family, and falls in love with her. He becomes determined to better himself and win her affection, and begins to educate himself through reading and writing. As Martin's writing improves, he becomes successful and gains recognition, but he also becomes increasingly isolated from his former friends and family. Martin struggles with his own identity and the class differences between himself and Ruth, leading to a tragic ending. These experiences provided much of the material for his works and also made him a socialist. Martin Eden begins: The one opened the door with a latchkey and went in, followed by a young fellow who awkwardly removed his cap. He wore rough clothes that smacked of the sea, and he was manifestly out of place in the spacious hall in which he found himself. He did not know what to do with his cap, and was stuffing it into his coat pocket when the other took it from him. The act was done quietly and naturally, and the awkward young fellow appreciated it.
