Marmion: A Tale Of Flodden Field is a historical novel written by Sir Walter Scott. The book is set in the 16th century and revolves around the Battle of Flodden Field, which took place in 1513 between the English and Scottish armies. The story follows the character of Lord Marmion, a proud and ambitious knight who is sent to Scotland on a diplomatic mission. Along the way, he falls in love with a beautiful young woman named Clara, who is the betrothed of his friend and rival, Sir Ralph De Wilton. Marmion's attempts to win Clara's love lead him into a series of dangerous and deceitful schemes, which ultimately end in tragedy for all involved. The novel is written in a poetic style, with vivid descriptions of the landscapes and battles of the time. It explores themes of love, honor, and betrayal, and is considered a classic of Scottish literature. The breeze, which swept away the smoke, Round Norham Castle rolled, When all the loud artillery spoke, With lightning-flash, and thunder-stroke, As Marmion left the hold. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
