General Robert H. Barrow, a three-war commander, rose from private to commandant and reformed recruit training and recruiting practices across the Marine Corps. In China during World War II, Barrow led Chinese guerilla fighters against the Japanese without communication from the outside world. During Korea, Barrow led troops at the Inchon Landing and on to Seoul. In the Chosin Reservoir campaign, Barrow saved Marine lives at Funchilin Pass by defeating Chinese Communist forces on Hill 1081, earning him the Navy Cross. Leading the 9th Marines in Vietnam, Barrow sent Marines into Laos, cutting off critical enemy supply lines. At Parris Island, Barrow stopped drill instructors from abusing recruits, ended recruiting malpractice, and demanded new recruits have high school diplomas. Barrow ended his 41-year career as the first Marine to serve four years on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This first biography of this decorated reformer of the Marine Corps presents his entire life story, from his humble Louisiana background to the plethora of posthumous decorations he received upon his passing in 2008.
