Twelve stories. Twelve kids their own age. And in each one, someone crosses back for a single night: an abuela, a great-uncle, a figure straight out of Mexican folklore.
This is the real DÃa de los Muertos, not a spookier Halloween. Marigolds and mischief instead of zombies. Warmth instead of fright. And one quiet truth a ten-year-old will carry for the rest of their life: that no one we love is ever truly gone, as long as we keep them close.
Written for readers ages 9 to 14 who have outgrown picture books, in stories so alive they get read once and then pressed straight into a friend's hands.
Set along the petal path that guides the dead home, these twelve stories follow ordinary kids through very ordinary problems, a fight with a best friend, the fear of being forgotten, a little brother who ruins everything, until someone they did not expect quietly arrives. The visitor never fixes anything. They keep the kid company, tease them, and help them remember what matters.
A few of the twelve:
- The Musician Nobody Invited: two cousins, one dented trombone that belonged to a great-grandfather nobody talks about, and a single seat at the front of the procession.
- What the Thimble Knew: a girl who froze in front of her whole class, her abuela's sewing thimble, and the night that finally gives her back the words she lost.
- The Dog Who Knew the Way: a boy, his dog's worn orange collar, and the long road every soul has to travel to find its way home.
- Marigolds for Mrs. Novak: the neighbor who isn't Mexican, isn't okay four days after the funeral, and doesn't yet know that a trail of marigolds can be an invitation.
- The Empty Frame: a photograph no one can name, and the second death that comes for all of us when the last person who remembers finally forgets.
The real DÃa de los Muertos, from every corner of it.
No sugar skulls with nothing behind them. The Marigold Road is rooted in the true holiday and its regional heart: the candlelit boats crossing to Janitzio, the sand tapestries of Oaxaca, the giant calavera floats of the Mexico City parade, the Hanal Pixán feasts of the Yucatán, and a hallway in a Virginia apartment building where a boy lays a marigold path to a door four floors up. Each story closes with a short Worth Knowing note on the real tradition behind it.
Perfect for:
- Middle-grade readers ages 9 to 14 who have outgrown picture books
- Mexican and Mexican-American families keeping the tradition alive for a new generation
- Families of every background who want to understand and share the holiday
- Teachers and classrooms exploring DÃa de los Muertos with real depth and respect
- A gift for a child who is missing someone and needs a gentle way to hold it
- The nights of remembrance each fall, November 1 and 2
The magic is real, and often funny. The grief is real, and never heavy. It is the rare book about death that a child races through and remembers for years.
This is the ofrenda you can wrap. Give them the marigold road, and give the people they love a way home.
