Set along the petal path that guides the dead home, these twelve stories follow ordinary kids through very ordinary problems, a fight with a best friend, the fear of being forgotten, a little brother who ruins everything, until someone they did not expect quietly arrives. The visitor never fixes anything. They keep the kid company, tease them, and help them remember what matters.

- The Musician Nobody Invited: two cousins, one dented trombone that belonged to a great-grandfather nobody talks about, and a single seat at the front of the procession.

- The Dog Who Knew the Way: a boy, his dog's worn orange collar, and the long road every soul has to travel to find its way home.
- Marigolds for Mrs. Novak: the neighbor who isn't Mexican, isn't okay four days after the funeral, and doesn't yet know that a trail of marigolds can be an invitation.
- The Empty Frame: a photograph no one can name, and the second death that comes for all of us when the last person who remembers finally forgets.

The Marigold Road is rooted in the true holiday and its regional heart: the candlelit boats crossing to Janitzio, the sand tapestries of Oaxaca, the giant calavera floats of the Mexico City parade, the Hanal Pixán feasts of the Yucatán, and a hallway in a Virginia apartment building where a boy lays a marigold path to a door four floors up. Each story closes with a short Worth Knowing note on the real tradition behind it.
