Maria's marriage went downhill fast. At first, she ignored her friend's warnings that her husband's behavior was emotionally abusive and could become physically abusive. She believed her husband-that she was the one at fault. Almost too late, she realized the danger she was in, and with the help of Caitlin's Escape Route, she managed to get away from him. When she headed out on a motorcycle road trip from Texas, to return home to Seattle, she encountered several situations, putting her in extreme danger of violence, but helping her to better understand why she had tolerated her abusive relationship. Once home in Seattle, with the help of her uncle, she opens a shelter for victims of domestic abuse. The reappearance of abusers from her past causes turmoil and trauma in her life, but also help her learn the lessons she needed to avoid repeating old mistakes.
