Manon is an opera in five acts, first performed in 1884, with a libretto by Henri Meilhac and music by Jules Massenet. The story is based on the 1731 novel L'Histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut by Abb Prvost. The opera tells the tragic story of Manon, a young woman who is torn between her love for the Chevalier des Grieux and her desire for material wealth and social status. Manon is a complex character, both innocent and manipulative, and her choices lead to her downfall. The music of Manon is known for its lyricism and sensuality, with memorable arias and duets for the lead characters. The opera also features elaborate ballet sequences, reflecting the French tradition of grand opera. Manon has been a popular opera since its premiere, and has been performed by many of the world's leading opera companies. It is considered one of Massenet's greatest works, and a masterpiece of the French operatic repertoire. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
