The Mandarin's Daughter is a historical fiction novel written by Samuel Mossman and published in 1876. The story is set during the Great Taiping Rebellion in China, which lasted from 1850 to 1864. The protagonist of the story is a young Chinese woman named Ming-Yuen, who is the daughter of a high-ranking Mandarin. Ming-Yuen falls in love with an Englishman named George, who is a member of the British Ever-Victorious Army led by General Charles Gordon. The novel follows Ming-Yuen and George's relationship as they navigate the cultural differences between their respective countries and the dangers posed by the rebellion. The novel also explores the political and social upheaval caused by the Taiping Rebellion, which was one of the bloodiest civil wars in history, resulting in the deaths of millions of people. The Mandarin's Daughter provides a unique perspective on this important period in Chinese history, as seen through the eyes of a young woman caught between two worlds. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
