In 1926, an unknown man appeared in Turin with no clear identity and apparently no memory of who he was. What followed became one of Italy's most extraordinary and controversial identity mysteries.
After being sent to the psychiatric hospital in nearby Collegno, the stranger remained without a name until his photograph was published in the Italian press. Then a woman came forward and made an astonishing claim: the man was her husband, Professor Giulio Canella, who had disappeared during the First World War more than ten years earlier.
But the apparent solution soon produced another mystery.
Police investigations connected the stranger to Mario Bruneri, a Turin printer with a very different past. Two identities now belonged to the same face, and people from two different families claimed to recognize the same man.
What began as a local case quickly became a national sensation followed by newspapers across Italy, involving doctors, police investigators, forensic experts, lawyers, judges, relatives, and an increasingly divided public.
