The Man in Black is a historical novel by Stanley J. Weyman, first published in 1894. The story is set in 17th century France, during the reign of Louis XIV, and follows the adventures of a young nobleman named Jean de Marsac. After being falsely accused of a crime, Marsac is forced to flee from Paris and take on a new identity as the mysterious Man in Black. He becomes embroiled in a plot to overthrow the king's minister, and must use all his wit and cunning to survive and clear his name. Along the way, he meets a cast of colorful characters, including a beautiful actress and a cunning spy. The novel is full of swashbuckling action, political intrigue, and romance, and is considered a classic of historical fiction.The other men, gathering round, glared at the boy hungrily.
