Konrad Fischer has spent his whole career believing that careful method and a clean conscience are the same achievement. In Lyon, hunting down a French resistance circuit with the patient, methodical brilliance that has made his reputation, he is very good at his job. He does not look too closely at what that goodness actually costs.
Then Berlin sends him to Paris with a single assignment: identify and capture the resistance operative known only as la Rose Noire - a woman the city's entire counter-intelligence apparatus has failed to even properly describe. Fischer is exactly the kind of patient, exceptional investigator the case requires. What he doesn't expect is to fall in love with a woman he meets at Sunday Mass, week after week, at a small church near his lodgings - a woman whose name he never learns, whose quiet, considered company becomes the only unguarded hour of his entire week.
The Man from Lyon is the companion novel to La Rose Noire, telling the other half of that story - the hunt, the courtship, and the reckoning, from inside the mind of the man conducting it. It follows Fischer from the windowless interrogation room in Lyon where his methods are first perfected, through eleven Sundays of a happiness he has done nothing to deserve, to a final dinner on a Wednesday evening in April that he believes is the beginning of the rest of his life.
This is not a redemption story. Fischer does not get to become a good man. He gets, at most, the chance to finally ask himself whether the patient, careful competence his whole career was built on was ever actually the same thing as doing right - and to find, too late and only partially, that it was not. Readers of La Rose Noire will recognise familiar scenes and lines of dialogue rendered entirely differently once you know what he doesn't.
